Architect Pati Santos on design choices that help our circadian rhythm

The importance of synchronising our circadian rhythm (the internal process that regulates the sleep-wake cycle) with natural light isn't just about encouraging a good night's sleep- it helps regulate many biological processes, such as hormone production, digestion, mental health and the reproductive system. Ideally, you want to wake early in the morning and decrease your activity in the evening, and not be exposed to blue light at least two hours before bedtime. Prolonged exposure inhibits the production of melatonin, the hormone that makes you feel sleepy.
